Some people affected by the recent floods in Mangochi are holding demonstrations in the district to force government to open the Liwonde barrage on Shire River.
The flood victims, say, the Liwonde barrage on shire river is the main source of their challenge as hundreds of people are homeless along the lake shore after the rising of water levels in Lake Malawi and Shire River
The Floods Victims who have started demonstrating from Mpondasi market in Mangochi to District Commissioner’ office carried their placards written “Kamuzu Barrage is not a death Trap for upper stream residents” they want to force government to open the Liwonde barrage on shire river to allow the water to pass and dry up some flooded areas
Unlike the last demonstrations organized by Malawi First, where there were no uniformed police officers, today’s demos have armed police officers.
