Police in Mchinji have arrested a 50 year-old medical doctor for allegedly being found in possession of assorted medical drugs without permit.
Public relations officer for Mchinji Police, Limbani Mpinganjira, has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as Gerald Lingson.
It is alleged he was attempting to smuggle the drugs to Mozambique where he reportedly operates a private clinic.
According to Mpinganjira, police officers intercepted the suspect at Mtukwa Check Point while on his motorcycle en-route to Mozambique.
“The officers found assorted medical drugs in his luggage including 60 blisters of Artemether Lumefentrine(LA), five bottles of eye/ear drops ciproflaxicine, four bottles of Gentamicine (eardrop), 1000 tablets of paracetamol, 2000 tablets of indomethacin, four packtes of MRDTs,1000 tablets of Metronidazole, 1000 tablets of Ibuprofen,1000 tablets of chrorpheniramine, 60 Virals of DEPO povera, 100virals of Gentamicine injections, 10 tubes of cotrimazole cream cream, 24 tubes of Tetracycline Ointment and ,1000 tablets of Sabutamol,” Mpinganjira said.
Lingson is expected to appear before court to answer the charges of illegal possession of medical drugs and attempt to export drugs without permit.
This is contrary to Sections 95 and 96 of Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority Act respectively.
Gerald Lingson hails from Lubayini Village, Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mchinji district.
