A 35-year-old charcoal producer was found dead on Monday in a protected Phirilongwe Forest in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mponda in Mangochi where a tree hit him as he was cutting it down.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), inspector, Amina Daudi confirmed the death and identified the deceased as Thaulo Mayere .

She said that Mayere, died after he was hit by a falling tree in Phirilongwe Forest Reserve on June 10,2024.

“It was reported that Mayere had two wives.On the afternoon of June 9, 2024, he left his first wife’s house and went alone into the forest to cut down trees for charcoal burning and did not return home.

“As usual, his first wife thought that he had opted to spend the night at his second wife’s house. However, the second wife had a similar thought in mind until the following morning when he was discovered lying lifeless in a pool of blood, with a big cut on his head beside the fallen tree in the forest,” the PRO added.

She said the matter was reported to Village Head who later informed Katema Police Unit.

“After visiting the scene, Police officers took the body to Katema Health Centre for examination and results showed that Mayere succumbed to blood loss due to the head injuries.

Mayere came from Chilumba Village, TA Mponda in Mangochi.
