Earlier today, Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed the arrests of Kamlepo Kalua, a Member of Parliament for Rumphi East in Blantyre, and activist Bon Kalindo in Salima on charges related to cybercrime.

Kalaya said the two suspects released voice notes deemed to be criminal in nature.

“The allegations stem from voice notes that the suspects allegedly released, which are believed to be criminal in nature according to certain sections of the law,” Kalaya said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance For Democracy (AFORD) party has released a statement condemning the arrests of the two.

The statement, signed by National Publicity Secretary Annie Amatullah Maluwa, strongly condemns their arrest by the Malawi Police, arguing that the charges against Kalua and Kalindo are politically motivated.

The statement further demands an end to what they call harassment, viewing it as a threat to democracy and the rule of law.
