Lilongwe High Court judge, Esmie Chombo, has this morning ordered the prosecuting lawyers of the government in the high profile treason case that they should put their house in order first on the charge sheet before the trial fully takes over. The judge made the decision on the grounds advanced forward by the defence lawyers that the charge sheet had some errors.
According to the lawyers who are representing Mutharika, their counterparts had some errors in the charge sheet which included the multiplication of crimes that could otherwise be treated as one.
In concurring with the observation, Justice Chombo asked the prosecution team to put its house in order and prepare the charge sheets in a proper way.
The prosecution team has so far been tasked to show real names of individuals mentioned in the charge sheet and the places where events occurred and not just be vague.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Peter Mutharika, is answering charges of treason and mutiny among others together with some other senior officials of the party. The people are accused of attempting to subvert the constitution following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika from a cardiac arrest.
