Reports indicate that state President Joyce Banda has once again turned down a resignation letter from the theoretical police Inspector General, Loti Dzonzi, on the grounds that he cannot leave the police at a time like this as it will send a bad message to people.
Dzonzi, in September last year, is said to have written a letter to the President claiming he wanted to step down from his post as the police IG. However, with the Cashgate cases all smearing the Banda presidency, President Banda felt that it was not proper for him as it would send a wrong signal and she, therefore, asked him to stay on.
Dzonzi stayed on with the hope that he will be allowed to quit in this month but his resignation has as well been put off.
Reports indicate that Dzonzi, a said and professing born-again Christian, is not amused with the way the government is abusing the police and that is why he wants to call it quits with the police service.
Meanwhile, President Joyce Banda has resorted to trusting the services of Dzonzi’s deputy, Nelson Bophani, as her IG de-facto. Bophani has been seen a lot as the front of the police while his boss has been relegated to almost non-existence.
