The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is set to dismiss Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, for her active participation in politics, a source has disclosed.

According to the information in our custody, the University Council has summoned Kabwila to a disciplinary hearing which will discuss the fate of Kabwila with one initial intention of having her fired from her position as a lecturer in the University.

Kabwila has, however, dismissed the Council’s wishes and has said that what they are wishing for will not materialise.

A vocal human rights activist and now full-blown politician who is contesting for a Parliamentary seat on an MCP ticket in Salima North West, Kabwila has indicated that before going full-throttle into politics she wrote the University Council asking for a sabbatical leave and when she got no response she assured herself that it meant that things were well.

“I wrote them, the University Council, asking for a sabbatical leave and they did not reply. That meant consent to me,” Kabwila has been quoted as saying.

Some quarters have viewed it as persecution from the ruling camp against Kabwila because she has opted to side with the opposition.
