Today is a pivotal day for Blantyre City Council as it prepares for its mayoral election, with the future leadership of the city on the line.

The race for Mayor features two prominent candidates from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP): Councillor Getrude Chirambo and Councillor Joseph Makwinja.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor position is hotly contested with three candidates in the running: Gerald Lipikwe and Isaac Jomo Osman from the DPP, and Fane Balaba Kanonjelera representing the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

This election follows the last mayoral vote in January 2022, which saw Councillor Wild Ndipo elected as Mayor and Kanonjelera as his Deputy.

Today’s decision will shape the future direction of Blantyre City Council.
