In a troubling incident that underscores the ongoing issue of infrastructure vandalism, Police in the Central West Region have apprehended Jafali Mtonga, 22 for allegedly damaging the system box of a crucial weighbridge on the By-pass road.
The damaged equipment, valued at K8.5 million, plays a vital role in regulating heavy vehicle traffic and ensuring road safety.
The incident occurred last Saturday around 9:40 am when Mtonga, along with two accomplices who are still at large, tampered with the weighbridge, removing its system box and wires.
The swift actions of KAA Investment employees, who witnessed the vandalism, led to a chase that culminated in Mtonga’s capture and subsequent handover to the Police.
Mtonga, hails from Mitawa Village under Traditional Authority (TA) Tambala in Dedza district, now faces charges of malicious damage and is expected to appear in court soon.
His arrest highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in protecting critical infrastructure from acts of vandalism and theft.
Public Relations Officer(PRO) of Lilongwe Police, speaking on behalf of the Central West Region Police Headquarters, Hastings Chigalu emphasized the severe consequences of such actions.
“We appeal to the public to refrain from vandalizing critical infrastructure. These systems are essential for the safety and efficiency of our transportation networks, and their destruction only serves to undermine community welfare,” he stated.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by essential infrastructure and the importance of community vigilance in safeguarding public assets. The Police are continuing their investigation to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the vandalism.
As Mtonga awaits his day in court, the authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activities and collaborate with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The protection of public infrastructure is not just a task for the Police but a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of every community member,” Chigalu added.
