The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has warned consumers of defective Takata airbag inflators found in some motor vehicle models which are currently being recalled on the market.
In a statement post on its official facebook page seen by this publication CFTC says “the Takata airbag inflator may, over time, create excessive internal pressure resulting in the rupture of its body upon deployment thereby causing metal fragments to pass the airbag and cushion material and cause injury or death to vehicle occupants.”
“The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has been made aware of information regarding the recall of some motor vehicle models due to defective Takata airbag inflators.
“The affected vehicles include models from 2000 to 2015. So far, the faulty airbags have been linked to 22 deaths and more than 180 known injuries worldwide,” reads part of the statement.
Some of the vehicles are suspected to have Takata airbag inflator includes; Toyota -Certain 2004-2005 Toyota Rav 4, Certain 2003-2004 Corollas including Matrix, 2002-2006 Nissan Sentras, 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinders, 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001-2002 Honda Civic, 2002 Honda CRV, 2002 Honda Odyssey, 2002 Honda Pilot, 2006 Mazda B Series, 2006 Ford Rangers and more others.
“CFTC also established that in 2017, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan issued a statement conditioning the repair of vehicles with Takata airbags before they were presented for inspection and notified the public that 18 people worldwide had been killed due to the abnormal explosions,” added the statement.
Consumers have since been advised to verify if their vehicles contain Takata Airbags.
