Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has attacked President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for relocating all state owned companies to Lilongwe, saying this is uncalled for.
Chimbanga’s utterance follow rumours that the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) headquarters is relocating to Lilongwe.
Writing on his official facebook page Chimbanga questioned the rationale behind the move to relocate all headquarters of government institution to Lilongwe.
He added: “What’s wrong with the other regions in Malawi? Why does this government believe that Lilongwe should house every government department? Are the rest of the districts on a holiday?
“Why not just rename the country from Malawi to Lilongwe instead if the President’s love for Lilongwe is that much greater? What message is the President sending to the rest of the country? And why are the rest of his advisors silent? Why aren’t his cabinet ministers, who aren’t from Lilongwe, resigning in protest or challenging him on this?
“At this pace, everything will move to Lilongwe soon—Kamuzu Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blantyre Youth Centre, and everything else.
“The only way to stop Chakwera and his government is for members of parliament to quickly move a motion to change the country’s name to Lilongwe. I have no problem calling it the Republic of Lilongwe, if that’s what it takes to make Chakwera and his ministers happy.”
