During court proceedings, Inspector Shadreck Wisiki narrated that the two had been at loggerheads after the convict discovered that the victim was an ex-girlfriend of her husband.

On March 8, 2024, the victim went to see her friend, who happened to be the convict’s neighbor at Makawa Trading Centre. Upon discovering the victim’s presence, the convict came out of her house with a pot of hot water and poured it onto the left side of the victim’s face and back.

The matter was reported to the police, who rushed to the scene and took the victim to Koche Community Hospital before she was referred to Mangochi District Hospital for further treatment due to severe buns.

Appearing before the court, Mailosi pleaded not guilty to the offense of acts intended to cause grievous harm, prompting the state to present three witnesses who proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In his submission, Prosecutor Wisiki reminded the court that the victim went through severe trauma and her life was at risk because of the convict’s cruel behavior, hence he prayed for a custodial sentence.

In mitigation, the convict asked for the court’s leniency, stating she looks after her family.

Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Chande concurred with the state and sentenced Mailosi to 2 years of imprisonment with hard labor as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

Mailosi hails from Makawa village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
