Police in Mangochi have arrested 54-year-old man on suspicion of stabbing a police officer in the stomach while resisting arrest on the night of August 10, 2024, within the township.
Public relation officer for Mangochi Police station, Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi , has confirmed the development and identified the suspect as Arnold Moyowatha.
According to police records, there had been an outcry from community members that unknown criminals were terrorizing the area, committing robberies from Mogas Lodge to Meru Filling Station between 9:00 p.m. and midnight, targeting beer drinkers, bicycle taxi operators, and sex workers.
During this period, several people were attacked and robbed of cash, cell phones, and other valuables, prompting a team of police officers to conduct an ambush on the night in question to curb the crime spree.
While on duty, the officers spotted three suspected men hidden in a dark corner near Perfect Lodge, seemingly preparing to carry out another attack. The officers quickly moved to intervene.
Upon noticing the police, the three suspects fled, but the officers managed to apprehend Moyowatha. In an attempt to resist arrest, Moyowatha produced a knife and stabbed one of the officers on the left side of the stomach, causing a deep cut.
The injured officer was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital, where he was treated as an outpatient after receiving five stitches.
Upon searching Moyowatha, the police found a small hammer, a screwdriver, and knives in his possession.
Investigations are ongoing to arrest his accomplices, and Moyowatha has been charged with unlawful wounding. He will appear in court once the paperwork is completed.
Moyowatha hails from Mbikwite Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba.
