Six people are missing a canoe they were sailing got capsized after it was hit by the hippo at Chingondo in the area of Traditional Authority N’gabu in Nsanje District.
Nsanje District Chairperson Mike Kafalachi said the boat had 11 people on board coming from the Malekeza side where people mostly go to do farming activities.
Kafachi said the accident happened around 2 pm and so far five people have been rescued.
Meanwhile, police have rushed to the scene and are yet to give details of the accident.
Nsanje District Commissioner Dominic Mwandira while acknowledging that his office has been informed about the accident said his office, has deployed a search and rescue team and a ranger as the hippo is still chasing people helping in the rescue mission.
