Police in Kasungu have six people for allegedly being found in possession of 50 cellphones and two power banks suspected to have been stolen at YoMaps show in Mzuzu.

Public Relations Officer for Kasungu Police Station Joseph Kachikho has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspects as Isaac Yona 36, Shadrick Kampira, 48, Francis Daniel, 31, Mike Maulidi, 24, Haji Umali, 18 and Chikondi Dawa, 31.

The six suspects were arrested yesterday on August 19, 2024 at Gogode turn off along Kasungu – Mzimba M1 road by Central East Regional Traffic officers who were on traffic check.

One of the officers spotted a Toyota Sienta registration number BW 2229 white in colour driven by Duwa, while checking, the officer heard the phone ringing in a plastic bag and nobody bothered to pick the call from the plastic bag which contained many phones.

The officer became suspicious and, together with her colleagues, started searching and found 33 phones and 2 power banks of which they failed to give full account.

Then the six suspects were taken to Kasungu Police Station where a full search was done and 17 more phones were found, of which 46 are smartphones and 4 are keypads phones.

After an interrogation with them they revealed that they stole the phones in Mzuzu during a live music show by a Zambian artist Yo Maps.

All the suspects are in police custody for further investigations and they will soon appear in court to answer charges leveled against them.
