The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has denied involvement in organizing President Lazarus Chakwera’s recent visit to the Vatican, clarifying that diplomatic officials from the Vatican and Malawi handled the arrangements.
Valeriano Mtseka, senior spokesperson for the ECM, stated that the conference only became aware of the visit through social media images showing the President’s meeting with the Pope.
“The Vatican is a sovereign state, and the meeting was a matter between two independent countries,” Mtseka explained.
“The entire arrangement was handled by the respective diplomats of those nations; it did not concern us.”
Despite not being involved, the ECM views the visit as potentially beneficial for Malawi.
Mtseka expressed hope that discussions between the two leaders would address issues affecting Malawians’ lives.
“We trust that the dialogue could lead to positive outcomes for our country, as the leaders explore ways to improve the well-being of our citizens,” he added.
In summary, the ECM has distanced itself from organizing the President’s Vatican visit, emphasizing that diplomatic officials managed the arrangements.
However, the conference remains optimistic about potential benefits for Malawi arising from the meeting.
