The opposition lawmakers led by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MPs have walked out of the August House protesting the proposal to adjust fuel prices in the country.
The issue was brought in the house by Chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change Wellani Chilenga.
According to Chilenga, the committee found out that fuel importers in the country are owing the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) K329.2 billion in levies.
Chilenga said the development has come about as importers are failing to operate due to a number of factors, including the devaluation of the kwacha.
But the proposal did not please the opposition MPs led by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Blantyre City South East Constituency Sameer Suleman who said raising fuel prices is not an optional
He went further to say that opposition MPs will not be part of it.
Just after Suleman’s remarks, chaos erupted in Parliament and all DPP MPs walked out of Parliament in protest of the proposal.
