The Zeerust Regional Court in South Africa has sentenced Detective Warrant Officer Annius Mmutle, 50, to double life imprisonment for murdering his estranged wife and her boyfriend.
The incident occurred on March 14, 2023, in Zeerust, North West Province. Mmutle was found guilty of shooting his wife, Motshegwa Mmutle, her boyfriend, Katlego Selokwane, and a friend who managed to escape.
According to Sivenathi Gunya of the National Prosecuting Authority, Mmutle fired approximately twelve bullets, killing both victims instantly.
The court ordered that the life sentences run concurrently and declared Mmutle unfit to possess a firearm. State Prosecutor Advocate Mabale argued that the crime was premeditated and deprived the victims of their constitutional right to life.
Magistrate Mothibi noted that Mmutle showed no remorse and emphasized that his actions were particularly egregious given his role as a law enforcement officer.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Rachel Makhari, welcomed the sentence, hoping it will deter future acts of violence.
