State House security personnel have assaulted a local councilor from the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Ruo area of Nsanje District, Mariko Mulotali.

The incident reportedly occurred this morning when Mulotali was heard making negative comments about the leadership of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) while President Lazarus Chakwera was overseeing the construction of new schools, Makhanga Primary and Makhanga CDSS, in the area.

Councilor Mulotali has confirmed that he was assaulted by the security personnel but has not provided further details about the incident.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira mentioned that the discord between the two sides stemmed from a misunderstanding, as the security personnel did not recognize that the man being beaten was the councilor.

As of now, the issue has been resolved, and Chakwera continues to visit development projects in the district.
