Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga is pushing for the immediate resignation of Commissioner of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Richard Chapweteka for being partisan.

This follows a comment made on social media indirectly claiming that former President Peter Mutharika and the opposition DPP is not returning to power in 2025.

It all started with a post by Honorable Nthambi who said: “A Return to Proven Leadership: APM 2025.”
In reaction Chapweteka said: “Dreaming is for free.”

The comment has attracted mixed reactions with many claiming that Chapweteka is siding with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Chimbanga has since demanded for the immediate resignation of Chapweteka.

“Commissioner Richard Chapweteka ought to resign and concentrate on Politics on the front line in MCP. If he doesn’t resign we Malawians have to take it in our hands and have a sit down with him wherever we meet him be at his house or office.

“Let’s pay him a visit so we can hear his thoughts. The Elections will not be free and fair with political hacks like Chapweteka,” said Chimbanga.

Chapweteka was roped into MEC by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and by law he is supposed to discharge his duties without siding with any political party.
