Well-known businessman and aspiring Member of Parliament for South Lunzu Constituency Alex Chimwala has resigned from front-line politics with immediate effect.

Chimwala who once served as member of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has confirmed of the development in a statement made available to this publication

“After a long and careful soul-searching, I have decided to retire from active politics. I have painfully realised that my involvement in active politics has greatly affected my business. For example, it is difficult for a politically exposed businessman to earn and sustain the trust of stakeholders such as clients and banks; hence this decision.

“To all my supporters, I say thank you for standing with me all these years I have been in active politics. God bless us all,” said Chimwala in the statement.

Chimwala has been in the forefront pushing for development in Machinjiri and he has been sponsoring various activities in the Township such as football, netball and others.

The businessman recently panted for free a house for a catholic priest at Chikapa Catholic Parish, constructed damaged bridges, assisted the elderly and also constructed a toilet at South Lunzu Health Centre.

He also dressed some football teams and Chimwala donated a minibus which is assisting in ferrying the sick to and from the hospitals.

Chimwala is also assisting 80 grannies who have formed 6 groups with a revolving loans with no interest.
