Government through the Ministry of Education has expressed interest in reviewing a proposal from Henry Chimunthu Banda, Member of Parliament for the northern constituency of Nkhotakota, to introduce multi-storey classroom blocks in government schools across the country.

Chimunthu Banda suggested that constructing multi-storey classrooms would help address the growing issue of limited space in schools, particularly in urban areas. He highlighted that the initiative would not only alleviate congestion but also support infrastructure development in schools that have faced challenges accommodating increasing student populations.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera confirmed that the ministry has taken note of the proposal. Nkuonera emphasized that the proposal is promising and will be thoroughly evaluated with potential actions to follow.

“It’s a great idea, a good suggestion as it addresses the issue of space. We will take it into consideration and act accordingly in the near future,” said Nkuonera.

The proposal has sparked positive conversations about how best to manage the growing demand for educational spaces as schools continue to expand in Malawi.
