Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has advised the United Democratic Front (UDF) to re-consider its decision to invite the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to the party’s elective conference slated for October 2, 2024.
Chimbanga’s request follows a protest staged by UDF women during media briefing on Thursday ahead of the elective conference.
In the video clip currently trending on various social media platform, UDF women vehemently rejected the idea of MCP to convention with some linking the party to the plane crash in Chikangawa which claimed the life of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and 8 others on June 10, 2024.
Writing on his official Facebook page Chimbanga said the party should the wish of the party followers seriously.
“This is what happens when leadership loses touch with reality on the ground. You’ve got to hand it to these ladies—asking the tough questions in their song: “Yasowa bwanji ndege ku Chikangawa?”
“Now, this question lands squarely at the feet of President Chakwera and his MCP government, whom—get this—the UDF secretariat thought would be a great idea to invite to their convention. Bold move! It’s going to be an interesting sight—seeing the delegates welcome a guest they neither trust nor like, and who many suspect might just have had a hand in the downinng of the aircraft carrying the late Vice President SKC, leading to his untimely death,” wrote Chimbanga.
He added: “Honestly, UDF leadership might want to reconsider this invitation. Unless, of course, they’re completely fine with ignoring the voices of their own supporters… and, well, Malawians as a whole.”
Meanwhile, it is no yet known as to whether MCP officials will attend the UDF convention or not.
