A 20 year old woman of Solwezi District in North Western Province is feared dead after drowning in Kifubwa River.
The woman identified as Tracey Mwenya is said to be a first year student at the Copper belt University who was on holiday in Solwezi, drowned when in company of family members who went to Kifubwa National Monument Site to celebrate their mother’s birthday.
A check by ZANIS at Kifubwa River at 16:30 hours yesterday found family members helplessly waiting for the fire brigade officers to come and start the search.
According to the brother of the missing persons, Crispin Mwenya said the family had gone to Kifubwa National Monument to celebrate their mother’s birthday where the incident happened.
The brother further explained that he saw his sister with two others playing along the banks of Kifubwa River who suddenly were carried away by the strong current and started drowning.
Mr Mwenya said he managed to rescue the two girls with the help of two villagers while Tracy disappeared in the deep waters.
And Northwestern Province Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary Tradeson Mulofwa who rushed to the scene said the government is saddened with the sad development.
Mr Mulofwa said the government through Solwezi Municipal Council will work tirelessly to ensure that the search is intensified for the missing person.
The search for the missing person by the Solwezi Fire Brigades closed at 18 hours and is scheduled to resume today.
