At least ten people have lost their lives in a tragic mining accident that occurred today at a mine pit in Mumbwa District, Central Province, Zambia. Five others sustained injuries, with one later succumbing to his wounds at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Central Province Commissioner of Police, Ms. Charity Munganga, confirmed that an unknown number of people were conducting mining activities when the earth collapsed on them. Rescue operations led to the recovery of six miners with injuries, while nine were declared dead at the scene. Tragically, one of the injured later passed away.
Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to search for any remaining miners who may be trapped in the debris. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mumbwa General Hospital Mortuary, while the injured miners are receiving medical treatment at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Authorities, including the Zambia Police Service, are working to determine the exact number of people involved in the accident and to support the affected families during this difficult time.
