The mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, was brutally decapitated just six days after taking office.  His body was discovered inside his pickup truck on the night of October 6, with his head placed on top of the vehicle.

The state prosecutors confirmed his death, and an investigation is currently underway by the state attorney general’s office. Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, has urged federal authorities to intervene, citing Guerrero’s “ungovernability.”

Arcos’s murder follows the recent shooting of Francisco Tapia, the city government’s new secretary, just three days earlier.

Chilpancingo has long been plagued by violent turf wars between local drug gangs, particularly the Ardillos and the Tlacos.

In the past, the Ardillos gang has staged demonstrations and taken police officers hostage in response to arrests.

During his brief tenure, Arcos had focused on disaster relief efforts following severe flooding caused by Hurricane John.
