Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule has firmly denied the rumors circulating across various communication platforms that the government is selling Likoma Island. Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday in Likoma, she reassured the community that there is no truth to the claims.
“Rumors alleging the proposed sale of this island have recently been published through several communication forums, and I am here to categorically put it to the community that at no point did the government discuss or make a decision to sell Likoma and relocate its people to the mainland. This can never happen with this government or any other government,” Kamtukule declared.
The minister highlighted that instead of selling the island, the government has developed a 20-year Tourism Master Plan, identifying 103 projects, including integrated projects for Likoma Island. Among the planned projects are the construction of a jetty, the reconstruction and extension of the runway, and the development of a hotel to boost tourism on the island.
Kamtukule emphasized the government’s efforts to attract local and international investors to enhance tourism in Likoma and across the country.
Senior Chief Mkumpha III expressed relief at the minister’s message, saying it dispelled the fear and confusion the rumors had caused among the islanders. He appreciated Kamtukule’s personal visit, which he saw as a sign of the government’s commitment and care for the people.
Resident Patrick Chikoti praised the government’s tourism-focused development plans, noting that the meeting had provided much-needed clarity and reassured the community that the island is not for sale.
