The Planned solidarity march in support of Palestine, scheduled to take place in Mangochi on Friday October 11, 2024 has been cancelled. The march which was also expected to take place in Machinga, Balaka, Zomba and Blantyre was intended to show support for the Palestinian people.
Shaibu Abdul Rahman Ajassie, Chairperson of the Forum for Democracy and Rights Defenders (FDRD) said they arranged the march condemning the government of Malawi for voting against a Cease fire in the ongoing war in Gaza where Israel is continuing occupying the land of Palestine and killing innocent civilians.
“This march did not mean that we believe in demonstrations, however having written the government in many occasions and meeting the minister of foreign affairs in January this year, we thought it is enough for the government to rescind it’s stand of supporting the genocide in Palestine. As you are aware, in 2023 FDRD together with the Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement (MPSM) led a march in Blantyre condemning our government for doing the same” he said.
Ajassie added that “we have been told that all the three organizations namely FDRD, MPSM and the Islamic Commission for Justice and Freedom (ICJF) and other concerned religious bodies will meet the state president Dr. Lazarus Mc Cathy Chakwera in the next 7 days and it is from this background the we have postponed the demonstrations to pave way for the discussions with the head of state”.
He said that the organizations believe that these discussions will be a platform where their concerns will be heard.
Ajassie emphasized the FDRD’s commitment to promoting human rights and social justice for all. “We will continue to advocate for the rights of marginalized communities including women and children in Palestine” he added.
While the cancellation of the march is unfortunate, the FDRD’s dedication to promoting social justice and human rights remains unwavering.
