American billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), has announced a plan to give away $1 million daily to a randomly selected participant until November 5th. The total amount of money Musk will give away by that date is $18 million—equivalent to approximately K31 billion in Malawi.
According to Reuters and The Guardian, Musk plans to distribute the funds through his America PAC, an organization that is currently supporting former U.S. president Donald Trump of the Republican Party in the upcoming election.
To participate in the giveaway, individuals must be registered voters in key battleground states, where both Republican and Democratic parties are competing heavily for crucial votes. Additionally, they are required to sign an online petition supporting free speech as part of the entry process.
The announcement, made by Musk during a Saturday event where one participant received their $1 million prize, has sparked controversy. Legal experts have raised concerns, arguing that offering money to encourage voter registration could be illegal under U.S. election laws.
Former President Donald Trump, aged 78, was defeated by Joe Biden in the 2020 election and is now running against Kamala Harris, who is 60 years old, in the upcoming election.
According to Bloomberg, Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, remains the richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $242 billion. This fortune surpasses Malawi’s K420 trillion in local currency, significantly more than the country’s National Budget, which stood at K6 trillion this year.
