Some Chiefs 23 in total under Traditional Authority (T/A) Machinjiri have asked well-known business man Alex Chimwala to re-consider his decision of pulling out from front-line politics ahead of the forthcoming 2025 polls.
The request from the chiefs come barely weeks after some concerned citizen from Machinjiri area also petitioned Chimwala on the same.
In a letter co-signed by 20 chiefs seen by this publication dated October 22, 2024 addressed to Chimwala, the chiefs have asked the business to return to front-line politics for the sake of the area.
“After carefully analyzing the numerous development projects that you have been carrying out in this area with your personal money like construction of bridges at Chikapa, Area 8, 10, 13, Makalanga and just to mention a few, we thought it wise to ask to re-visit it,” said the chiefs in the letter.
The chiefs went further to point out the revolving loan fund for the elderly, sponsorship of football leagues and upgrading of some football grounds and other activities as the main reason that have forced the chief to petition Chimwala.
According to the letter, the chiefs, however said that the letter does not mean that they are endorsing him but to ensure continuity of various development projects in the area.
When contacted for comment Chimwala acknowledged to have received the letter, saying his consulting with his family on the matter.
“I will think about it because most of the chiefs who have signed on the letter are from my home area and this means i am being called back duty. For now give me sometime to consult my family members who advised me to pull out of front-line politics.
“What i can only say to the chiefs and all people from Machinjiri area is to go and register in large numbers if they want change. In Machinjiri, the registration exercise is commencing on November 9, 2024 and it will run for 14 days,” said Chimwala.
If Chimwala accepts the plea by the chiefs, it means he will be contesting in South Lunzu Constituency.
