This morning, President Lazarus Chakwera is overseeing the swearing-in of newly appointed members of the commission of inquiry into the tragic aircraft accident that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in June.

The commission, comprising 19 members, was appointed last week. Justice Jabbar Alide will serve as the Chairperson. Other members include Monsignor Dr. Patrick Thawale, Pastor Tony Nyirenda, Bishop Mary Nkosi, Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise, Inkosi ya Makosi Mmbelwa V, Senior Chief Makwangwala, Justin Mkandawire, and Brigadier Cosgrove Mituka (Retired).

Representatives from the civil society also feature prominently, with women’s rights activist Emma Kaliya and human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa among those to be sworn in. Additional members include Dixie Kwatani, Professor Nyengo Mkandawire, Senior Counsel Alan Chinula, Esther Chioko, Nimia Kambiri Mzembe, Lidia Chiotha, Ruth Mwandira, Mirriam Wemba, and Chizaso Nyirongo, along with Judge Paul Chiotcha serving as secretaries.

This commission is tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the accident and ensuring accountability.
