Two Mozambican nationals have drowned in Mpeni Dam, located within Ngapani Estate, in Mangochi during an attempt to steal fish from the dam.

Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police Station Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has identified the two as Chiwaya Brake, 45, and Asedi Malunda, 38, indicating that the incident occurred on October 29th, 2024 at the said Estate.

“Reports indicate that the two friends sneaked into the estate on the afternoon of October 28, 2024 for illegal fishing but never returned,” Daudi said.

The following day, their wives contracted estate officials, prompting a search at the dam and the first body was discovered floating with a fishing net nearby, while the second body was found stuck in the mud after a thorough search.

Postmortem results from Ngapani Health Center indicated that they all died from suffocation.

Meanwhile, the bodies have been transported to Mozambique for burial after being identified by their wives.
