Police in Nkhotakota district have detained a 42-year-old man named Nelson Banda, who was found with 239 new national identity cards.
Spokesperson Paul Malimwe confirmed the detention, stating that authorities are collaborating with officials from the National Registration Bureau to investigate the situation.
Banda claims he received the identity cards from the headteacher of Kasipa Primary School to distribute to their rightful owners in the Mapala area.
This incident is particularly concerning as voter registration for the 2025 general elections is currently underway in the district.
The police are taking the matter seriously, given the potential implications for the electoral process.
