The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has instituted patrol teams to monitor the sale of fuel following reports that some filling stations are hoarding it.

MERA boss Henry Kachaje made these remarks during a press briefing on the fuel crisis in the country.

Kachaje stated that MERA will confiscate or suspend the licenses of such filling stations.

He also took a strong stance against black-market dealers who are selling fuel at inflated prices, saying they are contributing to the persistence of the problem.

He emphasized that this is against the law, and if they are found, they will be prosecuted accordingly.

This situation arises amidst reports that on the black market, dealers are selling motor oil at prices ranging from K6000 to K8000.
