A fisherman in the area of Chief Tengani in Nsanje District has died after accidentally swallowing a live fish last night.

Nyakwawa Chief Dumba, whose area is where the accident occurred, reported that the fisherman, named Masundu Mereka, was fishing in the Mpimbi River when the tragedy took place.

According to Mfumuyi, Mereka was holding a live fish known as Khakana when it accidentally escaped and jumped into his mouth, becoming lodged in his throat.

The chief stated that, as a result, Mereka was bleeding from his mouth and nose, and people rushed him to a small hospital in Tengani. Unfortunately, the doctors there confirmed that he had arrived at the hospital already dead.

The late Masundu Mereka hailed from Bazhu village in the Mbenje chief’s area in Nsanje District.
