President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Mr Duma Gideon Boko on his victory in Botswana’s presidential elections.

In a post on his Facebook page, the Head of State also congratulated the people in that country for their commitment towards fair and peaceful elections.

President Hichilema commended outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi for “graciously” conceding and further consolidating democracy in the region and the continent as a whole.

“… While ensuring a smooth transfer of power. His actions have further strengthened the democratic fabric of Botswana. This victory is not just a win for the UDC Party, but a win for democracy itself and most importantly the people’s will,” he wrote.

“We look forward to the continued implementation of our bilateral cooperation agreements with the new leadership.”
Mr Masisi conceded defeat this morning and vowed to support his successor.

He said when he addressed the press that “… I will also hand over all government matters to the President so he may address them… I will continue to serve your interests and the interests of my beloved country, Botswana in the parameters of our Constitution.”

“I promise to do my part in building a strong country from within and to work with the new administration…”
