The state says it will appeal against the acquittal of former Nsanje district council Accounts Assistant, Geoffrey Thupilifana, who was suspended from work last year over forgery and uttering a false document accusations.

Nsanje police Station Prosecution Officer, Gladstone Kanyenzi, told the press that, “the state is not satisfied with the judgement hence the move to appeal,” explained Kanyenzi.

Nsanje Third Grade Magistrate, Haneef Ngundende, in a judgement meted out on Friday last week, found that the state fell short in proving the accused guilty.

The court further noted that, “this was a well-coordinated plan to plunder public funds by some officers at the council only that the deal was not well negotiated. The accused was opted as a fall guy in the whole scheme.”

Thupilifana allegedly forged cheque number 000196 meant for Nsanje District Hospital MSF support and cheque number 034941 meant for Nsanje DC ORT among other accusations. The accused allegedly forged authorizing signatures without an official authority.
