Several wellknown  Malawian artists, including Emmie Deebo, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, and comedian Mr. Jokes, have withdrawn from this year’s Maso Awards following the public release of the nominee categories.

The artists cited various reasons for stepping back from the awards competition, raising questions among fans and followers.

Comedian Mr. Jokes expressed concerns over the transparency of the voting process. “Despite ongoing voting, the results appear static, showing no changes over time, which raises doubts about their authenticity,” he stated, calling for a more transparent and credible system.

Gospel musician Ethel Kamwendo Banda commented on her decision to withdraw, saying, “I’ve decided to focus on my current projects and pass on this opportunity. We will revisit this next year once our new projects are out.”

Responding to these withdrawals, Maso Awards organizers condemned the last-minute decisions by the artists, explaining that they had been in contact with nearly all 206 nominees across 43 categories prior to the public announcement. “We ensured each nominee confirmed their participation and provided images for public use, with only a few exceptions,” they said.

Organizers also raised concerns that the withdrawals could discourage potential investors interested in supporting the awards program.

Malawian netizens reacted with surprise and mixed opinions. While some sympathized with the artists’ concerns, others felt the withdrawals cast a negative light, particularly since the artists could have opted out earlier, as Zeze did, rather than waiting until the nominee announcement.

The controversy has sparked debate about the fairness and professionalism in award processes, with many hoping for improvements in future events.
