The suspect in the case where a 90-year-old headman in Lwiindi village of Musokotwani chiefdom in Kazungula district in Zambia was hacked to death has committed suicide.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, notes that the man, whose identity is yet to be made public, drank a poisonous substance.
On November 9, 2024, around 18:00 hours, the senior citizen, David Machachani, was attacked by the deceased suspect after he had requested his presence to inquire about certain issues.
Daka notes that Machachani was repeatedly struck on the head with an unknown heavy instrument.
He explains that on the day of the incident, the wife of the deceased, Jessy Musambo, aged 80, was preparing supper outside while her husband was inside the hut.
While outside, the wife heard someone behind their house excusing himself for attention, introducing himself as having come from Ngweze area in the same district.
The stranger demanded to have an audience with the deceased for some general inquiries.
Daka states that when the victim went outside to converse with the stranger face-to-face, the mystery man suddenly lifted an unknown heavy sharp instrument and hacked the deceased.
Following the ordeal, the wife of the deceased, who stood behind her husband, screamed loudly, attracting the attention of some neighbors and causing the unidentified man to flee from the scene.
Daka says police officers who visited the crime scene found the lifeless body of the victim lying on his back between two small houses, having sustained multiple cuts on the head and face, indicating repeated hacking.
