Leader of Opposition George Chaponda has raised concerns in Parliament, questioning why the government allegedly allowed panga-wielding individuals to disrupt demonstrations in Lilongwe. Chaponda claimed the individuals, who disrupted protests addressing national issues like fuel shortages, are linked to the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Chaponda raised the matter on a point of order during a parliamentary session.
However, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, who also serves as MCP’s first Vice President, advised him to adhere to parliamentary procedure.
“You are raising an important issue, but follow procedure,” Hara responded.
The demonstrations in Lilongwe have highlighted growing public frustration with fuel shortages and other economic challenges, with tensions escalating due to alleged interference from unidentified individuals.
