Students at the Lilongwe Teachers Training College (TTC) have been boycotting classes for two weeks, protesting against the government’s failure to pay their field allowances.
Giveness Mwanza, the president of the Students’ Union, revealed that despite repeated efforts to push for payment, many students have either received no allowances or only partial payments. According to Mwanza, each student was entitled to 20,000 kwacha per month for six months as part of their field allowance.
“Some students have not been paid at all, while others only received half the amount,” Mwanza stated, expressing frustration over the delay in resolving the issue.
The school’s management has confirmed the ongoing boycott, which has severely disrupted academic activities.
Responding to the matter, Ministry of Education spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera said they are aware of the students’ concerns but requested more time to consult on the issue.
The students are demanding immediate action to address the issue and ensure they receive the funds owed to them.
