The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has voiced dissatisfaction with President Lazarus Chakwera’s yesternight national address, stating that it fell short of addressing critical issues facing the nation.
The organization expressed disappointment over the President’s failure to announce leadership changes in key sectors, particularly the police service, which it accuses of inefficiency during protests.
HRDC Vice Chairperson Michael Kayiyatsa said the coalition had expected Chakwera to address significant national challenges, including the pressing issues of governance and public safety.
“It is surprising that the President has taken no action regarding leadership in institutions like the police, despite their inaction during violent incidents,” said Kayiyatsa.
Regarding the government’s proposed partnership with the private sector to import fuel, Kayiyatsa said HRDC would wait to assess its effectiveness. However, he expressed skepticism, citing the potential reliance on loans as a major challenge for its implementation.
The HRDC has called on the President to take decisive steps in addressing the country’s pressing issues to regain public trust.
