Mighty Mukuru Wanderers president and board chairperson, Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, has attributed his team’s struggles and the state of football in Malawi to a lack of depth among players and coaches in the country.
Speaking after Wanderers’ 1-0 loss to Silver Strikers, which secured the TNM Super League title for the Bankers on Saturday, Mpinganjira expressed his concerns:
“I have sadly concluded that we do not have the depth of both players and coaches in Malawi. As long as the situation remains like this, Malawi football will never develop. It will forever remain mediocre.”
The business magnate and philanthropist lamented the absence of standout talent, saying he struggles to identify any player or coach worth hiring or investing in.
“While teams can beat each other in Malawi, they cannot compete at the continental level. This also applies to the national team,” he added, highlighting the broader challenges facing football development in the country.
