The Lusaka Magistrate’s Court in Zambia, has today on 3rd December 2025 granted bail to Ernest and Elijah Kaumba, accused of insulting President Hakainde Hichilema.

The court set bail at K5,000 each in their own recognisance.

The two brothers, aged 22 and 26, appeared in court facing charges of using insulting language. Represented by lawyers Makebi Zulu and Jonas Zimba, they had spent over 50 days in police custody following their detention on October 3, 2024, on charges of seditious practices.

The defense team, instructed by former President Edgar Lungu, successfully petitioned the court to grant bail pending trial.

The Human Rights Commission previously called for the immediate release of the Kaumba brothers on police bond or their swift presentation in court, citing prolonged detention without trial.

The case continues as the brothers prepare to face trial for the alleged offense.
