The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has demanded clarity from the Blantyre City Council on the ongoing issues surrounding Kamba Market. This follows recent eviction notices issued to traders, leaving many questions about the market’s future unanswered.

In a statement, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, invoking the Access to Information (ATI) Act to seek detailed explanations.

The organization is requesting the council to clarify the market’s classification within the city’s master plan, provide information on the agreements made with an investor from Lilongwe, explain the process used to select the investor, and outline how the current traders were engaged in the decision-making process.

CDEDI has set a seven-day deadline for the council to respond, stressing the importance of addressing these concerns to safeguard the interests of the traders and uphold good governance practices.
