The Malawi Police Service has arrested several individuals suspected of perpetrating violence during last week’s demonstrations in Lilongwe, where some assailants were armed with clubs.

Inspector General of Police, Marylene Yolamu, confirmed the arrests in a video statement, noting that the suspects would appear in court soon. However, she refrained from disclosing their identities to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Yolamu underscored the importance of mutual respect and understanding, reminding citizens that while exercising their rights, they must also respect the rights of others.

The arrests come in response to calls from former presidents urging the police to take decisive action against the disruptions caused during the protests.
