The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has issued a warning on Cyclone Chido which is expected to make a landfall on Sunday December 15, near Nacala in Mozambique which stands at distance of about 500km from Mulanje.
According to Dodma, Chido has developed into a severe cyclone and is moving westwards, at a speed of 19 kilometres per hour over the Indian Ocean.
A statement from the department reads:” There is a 60 per cent likelihood that the cyclone’s remnants could reach Malawi and trigger heavy rainfall and floods in some parts of the country from 15th or 16th December, 2024.”
The statement issued by Dodma commissioner Charles Kalemba, further says there is therefore a need for people in flood-prone areas to move to safer places.
