United Transformation Movement (UTM) has quashed the inquiry report into the plane crash that killed vice-president Saulos Chilima and eight others on June 10, 2024.
The commission, led by its chairperson Justice Jabbar Alide, presented the findings in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Presenting the report Alide ruled out foul play on the accident as claimed by some Malawians.
“From the evidence we gathered, there is no proof of technical factors. However, the commission is aware of technical investigation being conducted by the BFU [the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation] from which we have not received any findings, be it partial or otherwise,” said Alide.
But UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala said the report raises more questions than answers.
“Nothing can bring you back, Dr. Chilima, nor the eight others we lost so tragically. But uncovering the truth about what happened will light the way forward. It is only through confronting the reality of these events that we can heal, seek justice, and ensure that such a dark chapter never repeats itself.
“The truth will empower us to honor your legacy and that of your companions as we strive to build a future rooted in accountability and purpose,” wrote Njawala.
Representative of the Chilima family has said it will comment on the report once it receive the report from President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
Meanwhile, the commission of inquiry will present the report to Chakwera any day.
