Five members of the same family have tragically passed away in Ntcheu district after consuming nsima with beans.
The incident was confirmed by Stella Kawalala, spokesperson for the Ntcheu District Hospital, who stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the deaths.
Kawalala mentioned that the hospital has called in an expert, Dr. Charles Dzamalala, a toxicologist, to examine the bodies and determine what may have caused the fatalities.
According to Kawalala, the hospital received a report of an elderly woman from the family on Monday evening, though she had already died before arrival. Later that night, a 21-year-old man also passed away.
“Yesterday, two more members of the family were brought in, but unfortunately, they also died. The total number of deaths from this family now stands at five, including the head of the household,” Kawalala confirmed.
The cause of the deaths remains under investigation as authorities work to uncover the source of the poisoning. Local officials have expressed concerns over the incident and are advising the community to be cautious with food preparation.
