A 31-year-old man, Afunika Jere, is recovering at Mzimba District Hospital with a severe wound, allegedly inflicted by police officers at Bulala over the disappearance of spanners and a hammer.
Jennifer Chavinda, who is looking after Jere, told Zodiak today that he was taken to Bulala Police last week and was released on Friday, bearing a serious wound on his buttocks. Chavinda also claimed that Jere was held in custody with his hands and feet tied.
The injury, captured in photos that Zodiak chose not to publish, was initially treated at Bulala Health Center before Jere was transferred to Mzimba District Hospital, where he continues to receive care.
Teckson Amadu, chairperson of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in Mzimba, has called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the officers involved.
However, Maria Banda, Mzimba Police spokesperson, declined to comment, stating that their office had not received any report regarding the incident.
